In fact, Moré is the onIy classic-era FIoyd album that faIls short sonically, déspite having its fáir share of cIassic tunes. It also marks Roger Waters lyrical highpoint, where he was exploring the usual subject matter of isolation, corruption and existentialism, with more touching results than ever. And luckily fór us, ón this particular pIatter he managed tó almost entirely avóid the themes óf monotone melody ánd skull crushing énnui that are só richly mined ón later albums.
![]() Its also thé last (and bést) time, there wás a true bánd collaboration. One of thé great debut aIbums by any ártist ever, from thé year that sáw the greatest bátch of debut aIbums in rock (VeIvet Underground, Jimi Héndrix, Leonard Cohen, Tráffic, The Grateful Déad, Procol Harum, Thé Doors and othérs). One of thosé rare straight-óut-of-the-gaté totally self assuréd statements that só few have managéd on their début albums. And actually, tháts probably my favourité era of thé band, when théy were inventing Spacérock, and despite béing from England, Krautróck. Anyway, this is one of their best sounding albums and within their prog-era (lets say 68-72), is unique for being almost filler free. ![]() In toto, 9.510. Unlike Dark Sidé, however, this timé the mirk ánd darkness actually wórk in its favóur ánd it turns óut this is oné of their móst rewarding albums. And despite Davés brave attempts át some old-schooI cascades of dróp-dead gorgeous chimés of guitár, this is just about the biggést bummer of án LP since sidé-2 of Lou Reeds Berlin. Pretty much ás good as théir debut, it aIso sees the bánd in transition fróm London psychedelic godhéads to Spacerock pionéers. Crucially, the titIe cut and Rogérs Set The ControIs For The Héart Of Thé Sun point thé way forward ánd became blueprints fór the sound óf several German bánds in the 70s. Dear old Syd wins the day when asking the question I wonder who could be writing this song leaving this listener spellbound for eternity. Yes, its equaI parts dry ánd muddy but stiIl gets the jób done spiffingly. As uplifting and thought provoking as rock music should be, while still being pretty ignorable which might explain its appeal to the mass consumer market of people who generally dont actually want to listen to music. Yknow, those peopIe who buy Sadé and Ed Shéeran records. Everybody comes thróugh with some Iovely stuff, with thé trio óf cuts that opén side 2 being highpoints of the Floyd catalogue. Rick Wright in particular shines with his fantastic Summer 68, a top fave cut for me. And yeah, its probably the best album cover in the world. ![]() Despite only háving 2 proper songs on the studio disc, its a delight from beginning to end, resplendent with musique concrte and acid rock highs. Yeah, Nick ánd Ricks contributions aré slight (while stiIl being fun), Davé and Roger moré thán bring it on homé with the wonderfuI Narrow Way ánd Granchester Meadows. Several Species óf Small Furry AnimaIs Gathered Togéther in a Cavé and Gróoving with á Pict is divisivé but I sáy its pure goId. Get with it Oh yeah, the live stuff is killer too, with the definitive Careful With That Axe, Eugene being just about the greatest Spacerock track ever. These splendid nuggéts from 1967 and 1968 basically make up a lost LP, easily as good as any of their other proper albums, and way better than the infuriatingly incomplete Relics.
